Psychotherapy

Individual therapy is a common form of psychological intervention for adults. Psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy are two common forms.

Marital therapy is another commonly requested approach. The goal is to create harmony and a better relationship for a couple who are in conflict or feel alienated from one another.

Family therapy involves the whole family and how the family as a system creates and maintains behaviour and attitudes.

See What is Psychotherapy for more details.

Diagnosis

Adults may question whether they have a mental disorder of some type. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Asperger’s Disorder are commonly enquired about.

Most Psychological Associates are qualified to communicate a diagnosis of a mental disorder.

A diagnosis is carefully formulated based on interviews with the client, and sometimes with other important people in their lives. Sometimes, rating scales or self-report scales are used.

The purpose of a diagnosis is to recommend modes of treatment for the individual, possibly with adaptations of their environment which will make life easier for them.

Forensic Assessment

Psychological Associates practicing in forensic psychology, which is psychology in a legal or criminal context, may perform risk assessments which estimate how likely the convicted person is to repeat their crime.

Custody Decisions

Some Psychological Associates do custody and access assessments, which contribute to a court’s decision about the custody of a divorcing couple’s children and visiting rights of the non-custodial parent.
